Tracy and David knew they would marry among tall pines at Pinecrest Chalet. For their engagement session, they wanted nature too, but nature that looked nothing like the forest. The answer was the coast. Their Pacifica engagement session traded forest shade for windswept cypress, golden grass, and open sky.
Pinecrest sits at 5,600 feet, ringed by pine and fir. Pacifica sits on the Pacific, where wind bends the trees and the horizon opens wide. The couple had asked for a place that looked distinct from Pinecrest, and the coast delivered.
Scouting the Pacifica Coast Themselves
Tracy and David did not wait for suggestions. Instead, they walked the Pacifica coastline themselves and photographed the spots they liked best. Every one of them sat within a one-mile radius, so the session could stay compact. They also gave fair warning about a steep hill up onto the bluff, though they described it as manageable.
One grassy rise above the sea cliffs stood out right away. It looked made for a flowing dress.
A Late Afternoon Walk Up the Bluff
On a Friday in late October, they met in a small parking lot and set off on foot. Both carried backpacks, so the first frames show them climbing a dirt path above the ocean. A distant headland marked the horizon, and the blue sky had just started to soften.
A Pacifica Engagement Session Among Cypress and Pampas Grass
A short walk later, they reached a clearing ringed by windswept cypress. Pale pampas grass leaned in from the edges. Tracy wore a blush tulle dress and went barefoot, and David wore a navy short-sleeved shirt printed with tiny cacti, khakis, and dark shoes.
Then the session turned playful. David spun Tracy under his arm, dipped her, and lifted her off the ground, and she laughed through all of it. Between the big moments, the two stood forehead to forehead, close enough to catch her engagement ring and a thin gold bracelet in the frame. Soft, even light kept the greens rich against the dry grass.
Planning Bay Area Engagement Photos on the Coast
Share your own scouting. If you already have a spot in mind, send photos and a map pin. Your photographer can judge the light, the access, and how far you will walk.
Plan for the climb. Coastal bluffs often start with a steep path. Wear shoes you can hike in, and carry your photo shoes in a backpack if you like.
Start before sunset. Begin one to two hours before the sun goes down, so you have time to walk, settle in, and catch the softest light.
Pick colors that suit the landscape. A soft blush dress looked lovely against green cypress and golden grass.
